The First Generation

The love of this Great Pyrenees Breed began for me in 1998 when I brought home my first fluffy white fur baby, Sadie, who was just twelve-weeks old.  She was a joy and quite unlike any other breed of dog that I had owned. We bonded immediately, and our relationship went on for 10 years and 8 months, before she departed this life for the Rainbow Bridge (doggy heaven).

Early in her life, she developed a fear of lightning and thunder when our house was struck by lightning and we were thinking it was safe to come out of the bathroom hiding place in our downstairs hall – as we emerged, it hit with an incredibly loud and bright flash.  From that day forward, every flash of light would send her hiding in the closet behind my clothes.  When storms approached, I would often get in the closet with her, and hug her until she calmed down, or the storm had passed through – she had this anxiety for the rest of her life.  She was a great dog and I loved her dearly.  She was my buddy, my protector, and my fur baby.

Second Generation

After our Sadie passed in 2008, after a long illness and period of decline, we waited for almost three years to embark on another Great Pyrenees parenting journey.  As much as their short life-span is heartbreaking and a known characteristic of the breed, which is categorized as a “Giant Breed” by canine authorities, we did not consider any other dog breed for our next fur baby.  We located this beautiful girl quite by luck and contacted the owner.

We met our new girl, to be named Lucy, at a restaurant parking lot half-way between the owner’s location and ours. After one look, it was love at first sight.  We bundled her up and brought her home.  What fun that was!  This was the beginning of an eleven plus year relationship whereby she delivered an undetermined number of hugs, lots of protection against “threats” (squirrels, especially), as well as she formed many friendships with other dogs and humans in our network of friends and family.

She departed us on the 17th of October (2022).  We are missing her terribly and are not yet considering our next fur baby – giving ourselves time to grieve and heal from the loss.
