    he’s gone. whew!

    car-wreck

“The Donald” came and went through our town last night.  After causing traffic congestion, heat exhaustion and one broadcasted arrest, he departed and went on his way to spread “evil-dust and ill will” throughout the nation of haters that are his fans.

Moving right along, it was poetic drama to see the image of a car wreck with the headliner “Protesters gather outside Trump rally in The Woodlands” on our local news station’s news feed.

He is indeed a “car wreck”… more like a “train wreck” or worse.

We hope that he is not voted in.  If he is, the implications could be enormous.  He could ruin our nation as he has ruined his other “businesses” by his impulsive nature, his inability to control his tongue, and his drive to incite anger in people, and for that he gets A++ on his report card – and this is not a good thing.

it’s happening again. groundhog day. we can’t really do much about it. stupid weather.

    Look at this weather forecast:

    IMG_7892Not pretty.  Again?  Really?

The mosquitoes are going to eat us alive.  We are going to have a big wet mess again if this really happens.  Here lately, it seems that we’ve ended up in an endless do-loop cycle of “unprecedented” weather events.

Not happy about this.  I was going to get to see my grand-baby this weekend, but now the likelihood of the roads being “underwater” between here and there is growing in a predictable way – but you know, they will never say positively one way or the other – they will interpret the data and make their predictions.

But just look at the facts, yourself.  Presently, the Brazos River continues to rise, as it still has not reached flood stage.  Evacuations are ongoing.  Today.  We are waiting on another report but in the meantime, the map here on the USGS WaterWatch (#WaterWatch) site has the latest info for you to visualize the WHERE of all of this wacked-out weather.

Here is what the forecasters from our NWS are saying as of the latest forecast before this writing:

    Update…
atmosphere is very moist with precipitable water of 1.7 to 1.8″
this morning but this will be increasing throughout the afternoon
and Thursday. Troughing along the coast to just off of crp will
slowly lift north and help with storm development. Today expecting
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms and have raised
probability of precipitation accordingly mainly over the central and eastern areas.
Rainfall rates of 2″ per hour already going over Polk/Trinity
counties this morning. Will raise a Flash Flood Watch across the
area through Friday afternoon but may need extending.

    Discussion…
southeastern Texas is readying itself for another few days of
precipitation brought on by periods of locally moderate to heavy
rainfall that will likely induce or aggravate regional flash and
river flooding. All of the synoptic ingredients are in place, from
the gradual spreading of the upper levels as jet level winds become
more diffulent just ahead of the southwestern-settling mid to upper
low to the Stout lower to mid level southeasterly 20-35 knot inflow
feeding inland convection with near 2 inch precipitable waters.
The devil is in the details as they say and this couldn’t be more
true of a idiom than for US over the next several days. Yes,
confidence is mounting that many across the region will experience
a round or three of impressive rainfall (rates) that will again
produce flooding and quite possibly various communities will be
dealing with wind damage from either localized wet downbursts or
weak tornadoes from passing strong thunderstorm clusters. As is
the case with all of these anticipated potential severe weather
events…the question of the exact timing and location of the most
intense weather will go unanswered until either right before its
passage or during the heat of battle itself. Although the vicinity
(unfortunately southwestern-positioned) upper low and subsequent
shortwave disturbances rotating around this main feature will
ultimately be the impetus to inclement weather, it will be the
mesoscale that determines the when and the where of the most
severe rainfall and wind. Or, in other words, it will be that
prior convection that drives future convective behavior and, if we
can better pinpoint this on a 6 hour time line, then we may be
able to more accurately convey a relatively higher confidence with
    a 12,or even 24, hour forecast.

The target days for the highest rainfall will be from as early as
today through as late as Saturday afternoon. This is the period in
which the upper low currently digging down over the lower U.S.
Southwest and the northern Mexico providences of Sonora and
Chihuahua will nestle itself over Texas, particularly over eastern
or south central state. With the highly moist ‘condition’ally
unstable air mass already in place over the region, this scenario
is the worse possible for US as it places eastern Texas under the
best upper exhaust pattern for series of disturbances (the ‘conditional’)
to generate lift and maintain an environment conducive to the
formation of continual clusters of thunderstorms to slowly travel
(train) over the area. Not expecting overall storm motion to be
all that fast within a forecast weakly steered lower layer. As of
now, the forecast calls for likely rain/storm chances commencing
today and persisting through the weekend. There will be periods of
either very light or no precipitation, especially if an mesoscale convective system travels
across the County Warning Area and creates subsidence in its wake. A model and
National center blend equates to an areawide 5 day quantitative precipitation forecast of between
4 to 5 inches, locally higher with amounts of greater than 10
inches certainly not out of the question. Of course, it will be
those 1 inch amounts over 15 minutes across more urbanized landscapes
that will be of the highest threat versus double digit rainfall
over a span of several days.

On a major side note…the city (iah) has not yet recorded a 90f
degree day this year. If this forecast pans out and overcast with
rainfall plagues the region through the weekend, then the city
would likely not meet 90f for the remainder of the week. This
would place 2016 in the top 5 if 90f was not met by Sunday (the
latest day was on June 15th, 1897). 31

    New Year's Day 2015

This year,  we attended a New Year’s Day party at the home of family friends in New Zealand.  This house could have been in the latest issue of Dwell or House Beautiful.  It was everything you could want – large rooms, freshly done – a back yard with a pool and separate changing areas – outdoor barbeque set-up – gorgeous landscaping and eating area shaded by a huge umbrella – with this new kitchen that opens out into the area – just perfect for entertaining…

The host and hostess were cordially welcoming to us – and as we began to absorb into the party, we realized that we were in the minority of “non-smokers” – which as I now think back, struck me as surprising in today’s smoking banned environment – I suppose that it made me feel like I had made some erroneous assumptions about the world…  Yes, there are still, despite the information available to us about how bad smoking is for everyone and the planet, lots of smokers out there.  They have just been forced into closets, of sorts… some very flash, I might add.

Likely, nicotine is the top addictive substance in the world, ever known to man, second only to food.  It is not like alcohol.  One cannot “just quit” without some pretty substantial physical and mental effects.

Smoking is noxious, but the smoker, when smoking, does not behave offensively or kill people as a result (except insidiously over time, maybe, and of course, themselves, likely…over time).  It’s not like the smoker takes a puff or smokes several cigarettes and goes out and wrecks cars or some other thing that “addictive substance abusers” of other types might do…  I guess that is why it is such an insidious and horrible addiction – it isn’t obviously addicting.  You don’t really notice when a person need their “nicotine fix”, except when the person under observation, who has been starved of tobacco for several hours might get cranky or otherwise “crave” nicotine, but it’s not the same as other addictions…

    Anyway, I digress…

The party was also “racing and gambling” themed, meaning, we were entered into a pool of $ by our family members, and we had an amount to use to “bet” on horses that were racing nearby and watch on TV as the races transpired.

Well…this was interesting, especially for me, who tries to figure stuff out, being an analyst and hobbyist at social studies – observing the culture and people watching being two of my favorite things to do…

First, I don’t usually gamble.  I really am shitty at playing games, mostly – except maybe Angry Birds or Solitaire… when I am bored, but effectively, I am not a gambler.

Let’s face it, my son and daughter in law got married in Vegas and I NEVER touched a slot machine the whole time we were there.  Why?  Well, one reason is because of the SMOKING.

Gambling and smoking go together like peanut butter and jelly.  Seems that there are zero “non-smoking” gambling establishments in Vegas.  Yep, they have these supposedly super systems for sucking out smoke and have areas of their casinos designated “non-smoking”, which I prefer to say are “roped off areas for second-hand  smokers” –  but these are more sections that sit right next to the smoking areas (the majority of the casino), so you still breathe in that second-hand smoke, and smell like an ashtray when you get back up to your room (yes, thank God, they have non-smoking rooms).

But anyhow, the two go together.  And in my family, we have several gambler personalities (not in a really bad way) that love to play games and fritter away their hard-earned, while in Vegas, most being ex-smokers…

Whatever.  Not my cup of tea.  All I can think about is work, fresh on my mind, and how hard it is to earn a dollar, and somehow it just takes all the fun out of it…

Damned if I didn’t digress again (sigh).

At this party, I played along – after saying “no”, then getting talked into it by my husband.  And it did suck me in, to try to figure out the whole process and how people make decisions about what to bet, how to bet, the spread, and of course, it all happens so fast that you can’t really figure it out anyway, because I think that is by design for it to be so complex to make it difficult for the average Joe to understand it, right?

After all, there are people who are professionals at this – kind of a type of “financial analyst” except that they are trying to predict how an animal of some sort will behave against other animals of the same type while doing some sort of forward locomotion…  Then it gets into the animal’s past behavior, the upbringing, the trainers and the training, the animal “controller” (jockey in this case), and all sorts of predictive soft analytics, maybe a bit of hard analytics thrown in with statistical analysis and such… but anyway, this is quite an overwhelming quick-study, to say the least, when you are trying to play a game with the correct timing and such.

It was crazy and it was kind of fun, but of course we did not win, and we did observe that others did by orders of magnitude – likely because they had more practice.

Everyone was very cordial, but in the end, the female contingent took off, and we were left with the “group of guys” who were more or less into it for the day… At that point, we departed and moved on out to spend the rest of the day doing whatever you do on New Year’s Day – think about resolutions, and reflect on the past year…

But now here we are in 2015.  Another year coming at us.  We have already heard of the passing of another colleague, which sets the tone for realizing once again how transient and precious life is on this planet. It says to me that there are meaningful times that touch lives more than gambling it away.

I know I need to remember this always: Seize the moment and make it meaningful…you never know when your number is up.
