    it’s 2020. it’s 2020. can’t believe it’s yet another decade.

The year started as it usually does. New Year’s day. Another birthday. Friends birthdays… and as always, new possibilities for the new decade.

As we experience in winter, it brings shorter days. Struggling with the gray days. Seeking the sunlight as much as possible when they present themselves – sometimes we’re lucky and get stretches of brightness.

    Glorious High Clouds

Breathing fresh cool air is wonderful, but I get a bit freaked out when we have crazy tornado weather in early January, and the flowers are blooming, and the birds who normally act okay are flying into windows and not coping well with the unexpected near-summer temp days that string themselves intermittently amongst the “normal” for winter days. Strange? A bit.

But, it has happened before, maybe, but not in our lifetimes so much. We maybe weren’t here then. I looked up the history… but the fires. Those are truly what is the most concerning. That and the knock-on effects. The droughts. All the stuff we living in a “privileged first world country” don’t see, that I have seen and you can’t “un-see or not remember” what you see that looks like that. You can’t, if you have any empathetic bones in your body… Or any sort of wired-in alarms within your soul.

What we see and witness is being blasted out every minute of every day. Citizen witness-reporting. Citizen scientists commenting. We observe the culture. The culture of our childhoods is not the culture of today. It is change. “Life is change. How it differs from the rocks…” BUT… guess what? Rocks change all the time. They move, oblivious to the life standing on them, or growing around them…

Rocks, shells, wood, sand… seaweed – elements recomposed.

The law of conservation of mass or principle of mass conservation states that for any system closed to all transfers of matter and energy, the mass of the system must remain constant over time, as system’s mass cannot change, so quantity can neither be added nor be removed. This means that your fine automobile was something else at one time, and now has been recomposed into your fine automobile until such time that it, and all its parts, are dismantled and again go through the process of returning to the earth or being recomposed into something else.

Think about it. What this does not address is that during the times of decomposition, transition and recompilation multiple processes are at work – natural processes or human processes – but then, think again – humans are “natural” unless… and then the possibility arises that humans evolved from “something else” that joined with a natural being and a number of theories come from that. Religion. Science. Lore. Extremely compelling ancient evidence that points to early in human existence, beings having the ability to view from high distances – the evolution and migration is quite well documented in rock records, as well as in ancient texts – even if those are cuneiform on rock scrolls – and in artwork in caves – interesting depictions.

Fascinated by timelines stacked on top of one another of what happened simultaneously on the earth, these continue to change as new discoveries are made.

Geology and geophysics – the science says: Rocks shudder under the weight of oceans and other rocks. Driven by energy coming from the core of our planet. Soft squishy humans and other animals are affected. We are supposedly the “intelligent” leaders and stewards of the orb. Despite this tag, sometimes we don’t act like it. Earthquakes can surprise people living in areas where faults have not been identified – this can introduce catastrophic outcomes. Geologists and geophysicists and their sub-professions are humans, first, scientists – and the “tools du jour” are what enables them to make discoveries.

    1920’s Geologists

We measure – we alert – we sometimes do not get the alert in time. Kind of like ants, we are… milling around. We try. We work at improving all the time. But we’ve lost our abilities to get along in the process.

Have we not taught our children that getting along is important? Self-focus is not. We really cannot afford to not share and consider our impact on others. Each time you toss something away, it’s on its way to entering that process of decomposition – a long process indeed.

Being a good citizen of the planet is about looking after others everywhere. It is about considering the impact of being cruel and how it will, no question, come back to haunt you – at least it will if you have a conscience and morals. The selfish politics rising in popularity over the last decade and a half, is not healthy for our continued existence in the end – it will destroy us. Guaranteed.

Teach our children and grandchildren well. Like the song of the sixties tells us to do. But, extending this to all of our family members, and young friends – teach our nieces and nephews that our planet and everyone are worth getting along.

Please. Where you do technology, balance with hand-made art. Where you listen to digital music, get out a guitar and a drum – or a ukulele or a banjo! Sing out loud! Read books! Real ones with pages! Draw pictures of what you see. Never forget how to do those things by hand and that the digital representations are just that… representations.

  • The Christmas Stocking Story

    The Christmas Stocking Story

Giving of arts and crafts has been interwoven tradition in my family for years. In lean years, we made gifts for people. I still have several of the treasures that my talented mother made. I have some also that I made for family members not with us any longer. I have been making Christmas stockings for people in my family since my first born. My great grandmother made my first Christmas stocking that I still have and display each year. My grandmother made a giant Christmas stocking that has inspired me always in my work on Christmas stockings.

I love all of the handmade crafts made by my family – these are true treasures. Even more, I love the memory of being taught how to do something by family and friends. My mom taught me how to do needlework (crewel embroidery), that I learned in Girl Scouts, but didn’t refine until my mom showed me some key points of understanding about the skill – today we’d call them “hacks”. Back in the day, we did not have social media and widespread how-to’s available to us except in books and magazines or if we were lucky, with a mom or grandmother who could show us what to do real-time.

Very much I wanted to carry on the spirit of tradition and love of making by hand the Christmas stockings. In this, I made a Christmas stocking for my grandchild just in time for his first Christmas in 2015. It was a work of love and hard work this is. Needle work is always hard and it takes love to drive it and have it look right – creativity is a must. Here is a little video of my tour of the stocking (pardon my amateurish camera work!). Hoping that this lasts so that my grandson can see this one day, and appreciate it.

Everyone loves to look at the work and ask about the history. Some of these are deeply handmade, some are just choices of really cute little items that we’ve found that we wanted to include in the work.

  • Christmas is coming. Do people think about what this actually means? That depends.

Christmas is coming. Do people think about what this actually means? That depends.

Everyone has a different perspective when it comes to Christmas. It’s a very emotional holiday, like all the others that have family and/or friend or combo gatherings involved. After a lot of experience, it has become predictable. Since I no longer host the large family Christmas dinner gathering, my blood pressure issues during the holidays have improved! This is not to say that this is stress free. Au contraire.

Last year, we had our little “human tornado” visit us for the Christmas holiday. For a variety of reasons, it was difficult – very turbulent times – a multi-variate combination of expectations out of alignment, a constantly moving with needs that were moment to moment and at times hard to read (try from the 3 year old perspective), combined with 3-year-old belligerence from an understandably stressed out kiddo, just recovering from an upper-respiratory infection – still on medication for that – and actually, despite the refusal to accept this grandmother as one of his qualified grandmothers, and accept her usual grandmother behavior (love, hugs, reading, spoiling, etc.), he was pretty much a well-behaved kid most of the time except when he was tired or stressed or hungry or did I say tired? All to be expected over a frenzied holiday. All pretty normal. Maybe a bit out of line with bedtimes, and being on a schedule, but considering it was the Christmas holiday – this was not that unusual.

Very much we now realize that the assumption of being a grandparent, therefore your grand kid will love you, just does not prove out. It worked when he was an infant. For some reason, only known to him, that assumption definitely is erroneous now. Somehow, something happened and he decided that one of us was disqualified as a grandmother. I expect to begin a new page called the Grandmother Diaries soon.

So, here we are. December 7th. We could try to be old fashioned. Decorate the tree(s) on Christmas Eve. Truly stick to the old ways – but, somehow, we won’t. That hasn’t been a tradition in our family for eons.

This year, we are not doing it up like last year, when we had the anticipation of having a little guy in the house. This year it’s the old boring adults. We have been through somewhat of a wringer in the last twelve months, that’s for sure. No good days are ever to be taken for granted. Ever. We know the potential for difficult times exists. We know how the Christmas story actually should be observed and celebrated, despite what has happened and is happening now.

I look at my great grandfather’s Civil War discharge papers. He was not with the Confederate Army (we know what those people represented – it’s in the history books). He fought for the Union (equivalent of the side of people who supported The Constitution). In these parts of the US, we see lots of little offshoots of confederates and in this county, we see few people who make themselves known to be Constitutionalists – unless you’re talking second amendment, and then they step up and stretch that to modern day as if it meant the same then as it has played out now (those are the POWMD’s I reference in the next paragraphs).

Everyone these days thinks that this could not possibly happen. I think that they aren’t thinking. What that meant was that times were difficult and that people absolutely went to war within this country because they chose sides and didn’t get along. This time, if a civil war breaks out, we will not have the same outcome. This time, because we have personal weapons of mass destruction available to anyone (seemingly), those who are weaponless and don’t want to fight will be slaughtered by the whipped up frenzied people who want their way or the highway. It would get really ugly really fast. Doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination. In their narrative, Jesus and God are on their side – just ask. They also believe that the Leader in the flesh, is a Prophet. That’s a stretch no matter how you think of it, but this is what they believe. Imagine the entirety of that big mega-church activating themselves as “warriors” because they are defending “The Prophet” – wow, are they taking LSD or something? Could be.

So, What we know is that there are those who now “vape” cannabis and some of them are members of the crowd of those who have guns to fight “the other side” who live within those “alternative narritives” (realities?) – and really do see everyone else as “the enemy” who they will shoot to kill – the anger driving them to this, of course being justified because “He” said so and encourages them – “He” who is seemingly above any laws and can do any whimsical thing that “He” wants – nobody can stop him because the deck is stacked on his side – he apparently has had a lot of outside help – and he has not the intellect to see what is happening – or to think it’s wrong – which is part of the problem – he sees nothing wrong and neither do his supporters, who are acting like Zombies because they want “the power” – can’t see it any other way. He dismisses the people there to support his security – does not see the issues that they see in the same way – Because it’s all about “Him” and as long as “He” is praised (his ego is stroked), and he is not constrained from making his own personal “deals”, “He” is good…until “He” isn’t. Then watch out! “He” will strike out against whoever he perceives has gone against him (even if he was lovey-dovey just days before and they were his best buds). 180, Baby! It’s a crazy person we have at the wheel, our Drunk Uncle Sam, ascertained by most rational people’s observations. We just seem to be running short of rational people on that side of our house. Must be something they inhaled? The madness of crowds, perhaps?

It’s just that that crowd of frenzied supporters – they are the ones who have most of the weapons and once they are unleashed by Him – He will see too it that “they” are annihilated. There you go. Simple as that. And they love love love Him. He love love loves them back. It’s the mutual admiration society.

    Sweet Jesus

So, I digressed – It happens. We were talking about Christmas and the meaning of it. Let’s just say that humans have evolved and have thoughts about all sorts of things related to their own personal religious beliefs. Some color outside the lines quite a bit. Let’s just say that we’re somewhere between here and there for the most part. Just understanding that at this point in time, we’re on the verge of something – not exactly sure what – but it’s something. We must all hide and watch to see what happens.
