    Christmas AKA the holidaze

    Mince Pie

So, it’s been building. That overwhelmed feeling that comes in around Thanksgiving and builds until after New Year’s Day.

Can I do what I need to do in time? What am I forgetting? Things cost too much. Can I make people happy or happier? What? When? How? Oh shit. Then the occasional panic attack, the deep breathing, the thought that at least I’m not trying to bake cookies for everyone (circa the 1970’s – 1980’s). Maybe I should host a cookie bake party. We could drink adult beverages and… Or then, that might be too much, too.

Then there were the days when I felt compelled to write Christmas greetings individually on each card that I sent. And I am verbose in my writing…so, this made me exhausted. I was going to night school, and really trying to be and do everything… I think. After work, I went to class. On the weekends, I studied. Then there was some amount of “free” time which seems ludicrous to me now. The expectation that I thought was there, might have been in my head. I don’t know.

And of course came hosting the holiday meals. I took this plunge one year, when I didn’t know I was expecting, but somehow the smell of collard greens cooking knocked me back! And I love collard greens! Yep, it wasn’t long before other things happened and I made an appointment at my doctor’s office, and you guessed it. A September baby was coming!

But, here I am forty and decades later plus a couple of years. No babies to expect (of my own). Only the drive to have a happy holiday with family, friends, and pray for Peace during these times of turmoil that seems to be everywhere.

The prayers are endless. Pray for the impact of the pandemic to lessen. Pray for a better economic situation for everyone in the world. Pray for those who are alone. Pray for those who are sick and in need of help. Pray for the homeless and those suffering difficulties due to mental health issues… And especially for the people in Ukraine who were needlessly and cruelly attacked.

In answer to the hysteria of the holidaze around here… I can do things to mitigate the stress. I

    Just a little green thing

Then maybe, I could just go out and take a run or jump in the pool (yes, it’s still warm outside in December it’s been in the 80’s F for a couple of weeks…).

Welcome to climate change. A curse of humankind, but potentially it’s what happens in end times if someone in the distant past seeded this planet and set this in motion. It could be significant that there are multiple rule books that have been written – multiple versions that have a disparate appeal, depending…

Antiquities from the grands and great-grands

But, then, it’s the holidays. We should be having a good time.

So, why all this stress during the holidays? Lots of theories out there…

I get told that I shouldn’t decorate so much. But it does help me to remember happy times with people who aren’t here anymore. Yes, it makes me sad, but then it makes me think about how much love there was and how they were, when they were here. Some of the decorations are really old – antiques by now, seriously. I do treasure them, because I treasure the people whose these were. The historical significance of these is immeasurable.

Just born so many years ago

Going out to stores to shop is crazy these days. Anything from the angry men driving the two story trucks, to the impatient women all dressed up in hot fashion just to go to the grocery store…

It’s a statement. It requires an escalator to get into it. Behind me in traffic, honking, I think, “Gee, I hope they don’t shoot me!”

I just get in the mode of, WTF? Can you people just relax, already? Then, I say to myself, “look who’s talking…” Eye roll. Get a grip! I guess it just depends on the person and the stress that they suffer, and how they decide to manage it.

Me, I don’t think people should need to look intimidating. It just puts people off. I sometimes think I should experiment and say to the driver, if I got the chance, “Do you need a hug?” But, I don’t. I suppress my impulses to do something that could land me in a lot of trouble. People here are not very friendly. It’s a real mixed crowd. As long as the goats stay away from the cows, everything is fine for them, if you get my drift. Color outside the lines and they’ll be trouble.

So, as I go about my business, I will keep trying to enjoy the next two weeks as best as I can and remember my family and friends even if it is in the tiniest of ways and gestures – of kind words, and do my part in trying to take the pressure off. I definitely need to practice at this. Learn something new every day!

Leading up to the crescendo of Christmas and the Twelve Days thereof, what I always like to say at some point is:

Wishing You and Yours, Peace on Earth, and Goodwill towards Humankind!

    The Kiwi Christmas Trees…
  • Coming On Christmas…

    Coming On Christmas…

Joni Mitchell had a song called River on her “Blue” album that included that phrase ‘it’s coming on Christmas, we’re cutting down trees, they’re puttin’ up reindeer, singing songs of joy and peace…” with a melancholy appeal “I wish I had a river, that I could skate away on…” – an analogy for getting to a better place – for more happiness.

Those were similar, but in certain ways different, times of turbulence.

We had the Vietnam War still going, and then there was Nixon and all of that weirdness, splitting the country into factions.

What we had hoped and prayed would become peace eventually did (sort of) but it took awhile.  And the thing to remember is that it’s not human to have lasting peace. It never has been, no matter how advanced the species evolves, for there to be lasting peace and for everyone to get along.

This much I do know, and most people probably do know this at some level, as well.

We have embedded within our DNA that shifting angst.  We have, many of us, that desire for “more” – “more better” “more of” “more this”  “more that” – whatever it is many of us want “more…”  We want “perfect” and we pray to accept within ourselves and others that we can’t be perfect.

Because we’re human, we cannot be perfect…

After those days when Joni wrote and recorded that song, things settled down eventually – for a while, as I said.

We had the to’s and fro’s of economic difficulties, wars trying to start, away from here, yet the generations who knew war intimately, were still keeping in place some semblance of civility.  Kind of.  Sort of.  Sometimes, it was as if there was a bit of the “war romantic” trend – but, with the Gulf wars (Middle East), we began to see some different things happening.  Subtle at first, but then as it evolved, we recognized that technology was having a very large impact on our world and on wars.  The generations were changing.  No longer was this “our father’s and our grandfather’s wars”.

Nonetheless, in Winter we have the time when we reflect – call it what it is – beginning with Thanksgiving and moving through Christmas and New Year’s Day – it is termed by some “The most wonderful time of the year…”  But, then it isn’t always that for everyone.  It’s just a goal, really.  Something put out on media, publicly, for the influence and urging of everyone to “cheer up”.

Except there are people who can’t cheer up.  Life is grim for them.  There is nothing but misery, loneliness, pain, desperation, despondency, anger, sadness, depression, and the list goes on of the aspects of people’s lives that effectively cannot let them cheer up.  It would be interesting to know just what percentage of the world’s population at any given moment cannot “cheer up”.  Probably, it’s more than 50%.  At least right now.

We have much in our country, relatively, to be thankful for compared to some, but since many have never been beyond the walls of their places of birth, they wouldn’t know.  You kind of have to get out in order to see how the other people not living here bide, day to day.  The first time you do, it’s a shocker.  It’s far worse than the adverts for the relief foundations.  Far more dismal and unimaginably difficult than people can imaging – because it is not a relatable experience for them.  They may have it “rough”, but they may not know just how “rough” rough can be.  Seriously.

Christmas and Hanukkah and the holidays around this time of year, tend to mark our calendars with some form of hope – of newborn hope – of hopeful beginnings… Of the beginning of salvation from “this” – whatever “this” is.

Every year, I get older and wiser – but then, as I get on, I look back and have that weird sensation that what I once thought about certain things, actually needs to be revised…  Let’s say this happens a lot, these days.  It makes me go “oh.  I need to re-think that”.  I’m not so stubborn that I will refuse to change my mind.  Sometimes, changing your mind is a good thing, actually.  It actually feels kind of good, sometimes.  Like a relief of some sort.

Well, back to the situation at hand.  It’s coming on Christmas…  We take this time of year to “reassess” — to understand where we are going (or not).  We have the situation where, it’s not what we do not have, but more what we have that we should reflect upon.

The public focus so much is fear-driven, these days – the awfulizing, the constant reminder of threats and horrors, then the promises for deliverance that is constantly the message…  Sometimes it’s good to just turn off the news.  Get a break.  Red Trees?  So what?  It’s just a weird situation and it’s not our situation.  It’s hers.  Bless her heart.  We’d probably have black trees with gray snow if it was us.  Seriously.

So, are we progressing towards the cliff?  Or are we just shifting into the next dimension?  Will we ever know?

Will we ever rise and look down and see that from a distance all is actually not changed, but merely ebbing and flowing – as we gaze at planets from a distance and see the fluid nature of those who appear to have some changes in some sort of regular but, irregular, patterns?

For now, we know that there is a good bit of unrest in the world.  As we approach the time when we contemplate the meaning of these holidays – you would like to believe that people will pause and think – you would like to believe that people will stop themselves from going out of control.

At least you hope for this time of year that we have some peace on Earth and some goodwill within humankind.  Let’s just see how it goes…

In the meantime, we’re going to put out the reindeer, and sing songs of joy and peace…

  • as slow as Christmas…but, it is not slow anymore.

as slow as Christmas…but, it is not slow anymore.

    DCF 1.0

Astoundingly fast the time goes these days.  When we were kids, we used to say “as slow as Christmas” when we thought that something was taking a long time.  We were always waiting for Christmas to come around again.  The dramatic lead up to the climax of the eve before the big day.  Loved “The Christmas Story” movie about the kid and the bee-bee gun – absolutely one of the best Christmas movies out there…  Likely, the kid thought that things were indeed moving slowly as he wished and hoped that Santa would deliver his dream!

I was running the other day and had these thoughts, as I do, about this phenomenon of time moving faster as you get older.  Well, unfortunately, I forgot it (mostly), as you do, when your endorphins go back down to normal levels after the run.  Shit.  I hate it when that happens.  I lose some of my best insights that way.  Sometimes I record these, but then I get nervous and feel like I am on radio.  It completely upchucks the thoughts and garbles the original flow.  I wish I could invent something that could record these important insights in my brain and not look like really screwed up garbage.

I don’t have the comic strip anymore, but years ago, Dagwood Bumstead (of the comic strip Blondie) awakened and opened up a notepad on his bed stand after having a brilliant flash of insight when he was dreaming – and what he found the next day was a bunch of nonsensical words written down, much to his chagrin.  That would be me!

I get a little depressed that my time on earth is now within that realm of “realizable”, as it now has the potential to be no longer than my longest marriage relationship, statistically speaking.  In addition to this, we all, as we age, begin to see each year more people taking off due to unexpected circumstances and early-onset illnesses.  Big fat finger in your face, reminding you that you are not in control here.

My neighbor told me the story of asking her dad on his 70th birthday, “Dad, how does it feel to be 70?”  She said he was not happy being asked that question.  He told her to consider how she would feel if she knew that she had more years behind her than the number ahead.  I had a similar experience with my Dad when he was in his sixties.  He got really grumpy when I made a bad attempt to be humorous about his age.  My bad judgment and lack of understanding got me into some deep doo-doo on that one…

Yep, it’s a fact.  No matter which flavor of religious affiliation you are, generally speaking, you are mainly being prepared for leaving the planet as you listen to sermons and read about what prophets say.  This time of year, the joyousness of the season is infectious and people of various faiths do celebrate The Holidays together as much as they can because it is positive and cheery – everyone feels good, mostly, when they get out and party in a positive way with people.

As an analyst, looking at religions across the spectrum, the preparation for “what’s next” in the human experience and birth-life-death-re-birth (or not) is the one common denominator.  We see that some religions more focus on the here and now, and some focus on the within more than the without, and some focus on the after, more than the now, but the departure in all its forms, of leaving the body in which we are living presents a major event horizon that triggers something else in the belief systems of major and minor religious philosophies.  Besides Death, Birth is that other one single event that is viewed as important, as it begins a cycle of life on the planet.  It is all wondrous and never solved definitively, likely by design by someone or some thing.

People dedicate their entire lives to the solution.  They go into the forest by certain trees and sometimes get so far in that they lose sight of the original point that they are trying to solve – or rather the mystery – maybe it is not a problem, just a condition, or a situation.  Whatever.

IMG_4601The trees still have green leaves on them where I live.  Some of these are supposed to have fallen off, or at least be brown or some other color besides green.  We have constant change in our environment that poses big world problems or problems of the planet.  We watched the movie, “Interstellar”, the other night.  It was one of the physics and math will solve this if someone smart enough can do this in time types of movies with the added aspect of the explorers going outside to look for a new planet, just in case, even though most people will be dead back home because of the time warps and distance issues.

You know – it’s enough to entertain you, and make you a little anxious.  Half-facts, with the seasonings and flavorings borrowed from Contact, Mad Max, and other such movies.  We didn’t see aliens – they were missing.  But then ahead of this, there was the boring war movie that had the alien spaceship and when I am falling asleep watching movies, they tend to merge into one plot.  Or I get distracted and the movie isn’t that meaningful, so I go surf the net, or go on Facebook.  I mean, how many ways can you slice and dice the plot lines?  It’s all about the same thing.

Redux.  Is there anything new under the sun?  No, not really.  It is, as I said in one of my other posts, all matter just recomposed and reconfigured.  Stuff just isn’t produced – it is reconstituted.  Think about it.  How would anything really leave and how would anything else come in?  Hmmmm.  Think of the options.  According to some folks who are “in the know” – it hasn’t happened that anyone can prove…  At least not yet, right Agent Scully?

So, what was I saying?  Slower than Christmas?  Whoever thought that up was just trying to be clever.  I am with you.

splashWhat I do know is that Humor IS required!  Without it, you are sunk.  “Bottom of the ocean…”

And before we know it, it will be Christmas Day.  We should celebrate something – any aspect of our lives that has reflected positively and gives us hope – definitely, it is a time to reflect on new beginnings and try to not think about the anxieties of the world.

What do I want for Christmas?  Twenty-four hours of no television, of good conversation that is not negative, with reflections of good times and gratefulness – peace for a day.  Longer if possible.  That is what I would like for Christmas this year.  Oh, and good health.  Yeah, that would be good – for the entire family.

We will save prosperity wishes for New Years!

    Happy Holidays from the family!
