If you can’t laugh…you may want to figure that out. Having a sense of humor may save you. I’m serious.

Watching a show on Neanderthals recently gave me some insight into how likely, whenever we, the human inhabitants of planet Earth, originated (the debate rages on about when and how that was and how far back…), there must have been also the evolution of humor at some point.

Discoveries say that as long as 16 million years back, laughter was traced back in forms such as responses to tickling in ancestors of Great Apes and Humans.

Can you imagine? Hundreds of thousands of years ago, the act of spontaneous laughter was evidenced as a part of social behavior as long as everything was fine – relatively – when humans were not under siege or starving… Quite possibly, there might have been times when Thor was wandering along and saw something or thought about something that made him go “heh!”. Chuckling.

But every day was probably life and death scenarios all day long – maybe all night long, too. Somebody had to stand watch. Poor guy. And likely, it probably was a guy because they probably thought that women needed to be around to have more babies and keep the cave cleaned up. Mom was probably good and irritated at times with this, and possibly joked around with other moms about this or other things… when there weren’t periods of starvation or attacks by animals that happened while everyone was asleep…

Life was about avoiding early death. It still is.

That was the whole thing – just like now, but more extreme in the brutal sense – real gore, blood and guts every day if you didn’t keep control of your surroundings. I wonder how anyone got any sleep. It was really next level rough living.

Big ass animals, for starters. No technology. Only the actions that were devised in the slow lead up to evolving communication and organization of things in their world.

The whole socioeconomic start-up. Imagine how this went and it evolved from having enough food to go around – how to troubleshoot people getting sick or wounded – how to know if an enemy was nearby and how to take enemies down whether it was one of the wild animal persuasion or the wild human ancestor persuasion from another tribe. It must have been a totally different world, yet in some ways much the same as today.

What I observe is that we still have tribes. No matter what anyone tells me, I think that it boils down to some base behaviors where all the filters are off being rather tribal. Just visualize for a moment groups of people getting all whipped up about something in a crowd – a political rally, a sports event, a concert, a significant event like a wedding or during holidays – then think about times when those have gotten out of hand – something goes wrong and somebody either deliberately or spontaneously snaps and changes the lives of many people all at once. That’s the crazy bit. This has been going on for millions of years – likely. Positively.

So, back to humor. “Humor” has a root of “HUM” as does “human”. Our good friends at Science Friday talk about the etymology of the word humor here. We thank the author if this piece, Johanna Mayer for her work in putting this together. Etymology wise essentially humor is a part of personality and we all benefit if our humors are in balance with everything else. So said the ancient Greeks about the four temperaments or humors.

The four temperaments were choleric, sanguine, melancholic, and phlegmatic. That about sums up what must be in balance. I am here to tell you that if I have a back ache or other discomfort, my sense of humor goes down the drain quickly!

Humor in life is universal and essential.

So many stories about how humor has helped people heal through the worst of times. For me, when I connect with someone with humor – having a similar bandwidth related to humor – it makes all the difference in the world. Having a sense of humor is one of the most important personality traits I can think of. If someone lacks a sense of humor, I struggle with that person after awhile. I can get by for a little while in conversations, but eventually… well, let’s just say, I have to exit. That may sound cruel, but it’s better for everyone. One of my favorite things to do is laugh.

I grew up in a family that valued laughter, a sense of humor, joking around to the extreme, and were supportive of those of us who developed kind of warped senses of humor. I did. Each side of my family had a different type of sense of humor. I would categorize my Dad’s as more cornball, but sometimes he could come up with some very complex jokes that I couldn’t understand (yet). He liked to act silly. He would do stuff to make us laugh, like driving down the road in the car and faking turning into the other lane. He would do stuff like put his hand out to shake your hand then goose you in the ribs, saying, “Shake…Spear was a great man!!!” as he was getting ready to tickle you or instead of that, he might not let go of your hand and pull on it instead… He told a lot of jokes. He was funny. My cousins sometimes would get it, and sometimes would choose to be humiliated by his jokes! I never understood that.

But my mom’s side of the family were more into jokes and joking around – playing pranks on one another – maybe more my mom and my uncle to each other and to their parents. Once my mom got me into a prank on my uncle, and we sneaked up to his room and hid in his closet when he was taking a shower. He came into the room with a towel wrapped around his waist and then when we heard him coming, she said “shhhh… wait until he opens the door…”, in a very quiet whisper… Then when he did, we went, “BOOOOO!” and he dropped the towel and yelled! It was so funny! I’ll never forget it!

My uncle used to call my grandmother and disguise his voice saying he was a gardener looking for work, or someone selling insurance, or some such. She would fall for it every time. My grandfather, however, I don’t remember having a sense of humor that was outstanding in my memory – and likely, he didn’t take part in all these shenanigans. But, these rubbed off on me and formed my crazy sense of humor that at times I’ve had to tame back because it has gotten me into trouble more than once.

I passed that wacky sense of humor along to my kids, one of which depended on his during very tough times in his life. He is no longer with us today on this planet, but I think of his sense of humor often and the things that made him laugh…

    Rob – Always cutting up…

Even when I am by myself, I laugh at things, and sometimes I laugh at myself. I believe that being able to laugh at yourself is very important. If you can’t do that, and you’re always in a state of being pissed off, well, how sad that is. You need to rearrange your stuff inside your head in a different way.

Let’s put it this way – many times, it’s a choice. It’s a matter of self-talking yourself into thinking about things a different way or re-framing to a different context. Like a lot of people, I have to shake myself and say, “Take more joy! Life is short! Don’t let them take your joy away!”

The poorest of people can have certain positive attitudes believing that they are enriched by things that the wealthiest of people don’t even notice.

Wealthy people can often become entitled, arrogant, jaded, and suffer a loss of social skills and their sense of humor. I mean, look at the richest men in the world. They are people who probably live quite strange lives with a good bit of isolation. There’s having enough, then there’s having too much and that’s stepping over a line. I’d bet that those people don’t have sense of humor that most other people can relate to.

I also question people that when they have a good feeling or something good happens they immediately go religious. It’s okay for them, if they want to see things that way, but being in the moment without having to give credit to Jesus or God, well… I’m just not sure about that perspective. I admit that God has a lot of control over everything, but there is a lot about God that we don’t know, by design, and humanizing God is probably not the best idea… But that’s me.

    So I digress…

All that I can say is that when things get rough, tune in to the humor – levity helps levitate you out of those rough situations when nothing else will… Trust me, I have the experience to know this. Thanks Rob! He was skilled at this…

    What makes you laugh?

Think about it. Can you make a list of what makes you laugh? I can. I hope that you can, too! Laughter is the best medicine!

  • No. I’m not upset. I just get this way sometimes.

No. I’m not upset. I just get this way sometimes.

It’s a crazy world these days. Tech has become overly complicated. Support is thin. Chat-bots (not very good ones) try to handle the questions but are geared for less initiated people than me. It’s frustrating. You get a person on the line and THEY need help to give you help.

Often not local, they are low paid and scared shitless, deathly afraid of making a mistake. They don’t give their names, yet you have to give them yours – sometimes sensitive information for “security” purposes. The MFA can be its own worst enemy (or yours!)

It can take talking to multiple people to get to an answer, if then. You may be thinking, “how on earth can I get help? What are these people in charge of this thinking?” No contact with reality. What do they think you have – endless time? I don’t.

I often get so frustrated I blow my stack which I know isn’t nice and I feel terrible about later. They are just trying to do their jobs and they are probably doing their best and can’t help the system in which they work that was devised by some “geniuses” somewhere else far away.

After awhile, I call time and just say nevermind. Today, I was told that my issue would be resolved quickly – 24 hours! Yikes. That’s quickly? And I pay for this with a premium support plan? Really?

Or you have to go through five techs to get to someone who can help. That’s fun. I sit and hold up fingers. One, two, three, four, five, six! At least some of them are better than others – smoother in the transitions and the calls don’t get dropped – the dreaded dial tone… Argh. Or silence of the dropped call…”hello? Hello? Hello? You’re not there, are you?” As if they would answer from the deep… Sure.

I end up helping myself nowadays more often than not, just banging through the old troubleshooting ways I’ve honed since the dawn of time… Permissions. Files. Wrongly formed paths. Misdirected links. Something blocking something else. Yeah. Nothing changes much. Sigh.

No, I won’t go get a job doing the thankless job of tech support. Why? Because of people like me! I’m their worst nightmare. Sadly. I need to think about being extra nice especially to the nice ones – the surly ones, not so much…

  • there’s a lot that goes into going crazy AKA losing one’s sensibilities…

there’s a lot that goes into going crazy AKA losing one’s sensibilities…

I just don’t get it. It certainly seems like the world is going bonkers right now. The whole planet. One thing leads to another… As predicted it seems. I’m not as sensitive as some, however…

The Doomsday Clock. Nostradamus. The Book of Revelations. The Farmer’s Almanac? Well maybe not the Farmer’s Almanac… but certainly, enough people are doing crazy stuff as well as our ongoing experience with “the virus” (doesn’t that sound like it’s out of some dystopian movie?)… Finger pointing and blaming. Scarcity. High tensions. Saber rattling. High stress. Anxiety. Good grief, we can’t ask what’s next, because “what’s next” could be really much worse than what was before!

Salvador Dali’s melting clocks always come to mind.

The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali

We’ve referred to the weather often on this site.

Because if it isn’t hotter than hell, or what we imagine hell to be in terms of warmth, it’s either raining cats and dogs (sorry cats and dogs!), or snowing like it’s raining cats and dogs and burying everyone in snow, or flooding, and burying people, places and things in muddy silt which is worse than snow because floods pick up all kinds of “nasties” that later get deposited wherever as the water goes away, the mud and sand and literally “shit” stays behind in a toxic goo-like gluey stuff that gets hard and is hard as hell to dig out.

Man oh man. Is there any good news?

I would think that some of the Oscar winners are happy, but then there are always people that go, “oh, she shouldn’t have won that” or “him? why him?” or whatever… Debbie Downers.

There is so much going on that is bizarre, none of it really funny – unless you think wild hog invasions could provide some sort of humor, or pythons coming north… Imagine – pythons getting into New York, then there’s another “hell freezes over event” – uh oh. Frozen snakes! At least they’re not on a plane!

The worst is hearing of kidnappings, and the toddler playing with Daddy’s gun and shooting another toddler in the face, killing him (or her). A three year-old shoots a four year-old. What are these people thinking? They’re not thinking. That’s the trouble. Dumb, stupid, ignorant – pick one.

More tragedy, more politicians deregulating guns, more after effects of deregulation…but, no – they are not truly “de-regulators”, they are regulating vaginas instead, or sexual preferences, or what kids can learn about history, or books related to certain subjects… It goes on.

The cross-pollination of religion and politics. Our founders did not think that the two should mix. I think we know why they thought this.

The people who have co-opted Christianity, taken it hostage, and are holding it for ransom… those who have created the “big friendly” mega-churches with the pastors who ride around in their Cadillac’s, Benz’s, or Rolls, or fly around on their own private jets… We pay for this with our tax dollars! Criminal!

“Cowboy Church” where gunslingers come inside to worship. The most totally bizarre concept ever. Back in the day, there were… wait for it… missions and churches, and nobody called them anything but. What would they say now?

Saying that they are “for the family”, when that is just a code-phrase – they are for THEIR family and that’s about it. The concept that they have in their heads of how they are “protecting life”, when the next moment, children are being slaughtered by crazed angry usually guys with military-grade weapons who can mow down multiple children and adults with them in less than five minutes. This is the complete hypocrisy of what these people who profess to be “conservative” believe. I think that they are master-manipulators, con artists, and snake oil salesmen…

There are a great number of “good” Christians but, they are not in your face or across the news pages… That is not a part of being Christian, the flashy headlines, the constant recruiting, especially the grooming… Just saying.

Something extremely self-righteous and pious about the chronically angry white conservative evangelical males (especially), and holier than though stuffed up Botox faced females (that’s even more irritating)… just rubs me the wrong way. It’s hard not to say something like, “get out of my face”, or “you’re really full of shit”, or just to test them, something in another language that they cannot understand. That’s not Christian behavior. That’s the hard part. Turning the other cheek. Keeping your mouth shut and watching it all.

I know what my grandmother and my mother would both have said – and it’s not nice.

OK, I’m not nice, then. Not about this, for sure. I’d rather just sit it out, the whole regular church-going thing. Holidays, I love to celebrate. I find meaning in those. My church, yeah. But to visit one of “those” churches where the shiny people present themselves as “Christian” yet underneath they are racist controlling awful personalities? Nah. Just to go and walk around and feel awkward amongst people who you don’t know and likely won’t ever – nah, that’s okay. I’ll stay home and avoid the close contact, especially now.

Somehow the lines are not as distinct so much, not supposed to be, rather, but then they are. My mom and grandma would not set foot in a Baptist Church, a Church of Christ, or any of the “evangelical” churches. Only occasionally would they set foot in another non-liturgical church – but, they would go to a synagogue or a Catholic church before they would go to sit with the Baptists. Something must have happened to them one time or another. Something did to me. The taste never wore off after that episode. In my adult life I’ve been in other churches just a few times to weddings or funerals. I just try to avoid the stress and the conflicts that these experiences produce. Plus, they always have their hands out for money. Uh, that would be a no.

Mixing Religion into Politics is a Destructive Recipe

Anyway, religion hasn’t helped much of anything in our world that I can see. Greed has just about destroyed it. And the former president of the USA and several other former presidents of other countries who emulate him (or maybe he them?) are the epitome of all of these horrid character traits rolled up into tangled balls of hot mess.

Right now with these extreme conservative thinkers (that’s an oxymoron for sure), they are hell bent to push their religion on everyone through legislating their morals, yes and it is indeed a weird mix. The combination of “freedom” with the 2nd amendment for everyone having a gun at their disposal no matter what type and who you are, to the high restrictions on women’s ability to control their own health and whether they have a pregnancy or not – this isn’t freedom – nor is freedom to be who you want to be whether you were born that way or not.

These yo-yo conservatives (hah! actually extremists) want only certain freedoms that they want and they are very picky but, for other people not so much. Their interpretation of Christianity is as warped as we’ve seen interpretations – as if the whole time they profess their religion they have fingers crossed behind their backs. As if we’re going back to the dark ages, rolling back the rock to a time when everyone had muskets and women wore long skirts with lots of underwear. It’s truly bizarre with every headline you read, to think that these people are in control of a lot of stuff.

It makes one wonder: if there is a God, what is God thinking about all of this? Is God just waiting until there is a certain point or line or polygon and then…

We don’t know. But, thinking about it makes my head hurt and some days… It makes me feel very crazy – like am I the only one that thinks that all of this is extremely nuts? Hmm? Clowns. A bunch of clowns. And guess what, they really just want the power to push people around. I just want a sign that says, “Our governor is an asshole bully” and be done with it. But, don’t get me started… this time. I’m done here…at least for today.
