Big Storms Everywhere. The context of climate change and our human condition.

    “Hi, I’m Gabrielle”

Today, New Zealand finds itself dealing with their “storm of the century” (literally), while having just experienced a flood event that in human recollection or record of anyone on these islands can say ever happened before. Two extreme weather events within a month’s time, after a lot of heat and rain over the summertime there is indicative of climate changes that have been showing themselves over the past few years.

Even the International Terminal at the Auckland Airport flooded in the recent flooding event, which is unheard of, normally in most developed countries. Albeit, the airport itself is located by the water, onshore, usually the water drains out to the waters of Manukau Harbor – but with the combination of volumes of rain within a short time period and ground saturation, the “normal” drainage apparently didn’t work. Now they are facing yet another threat of not only large volumes of precipitation, but gale force winds that exceeds what they typically experience in storms, as well.

Our family and friends there haven’t experienced our infamous Gulf of Mexico hurricanes unless they have been where a hurricane has happened. Ours are of the variety that people experience in warm water environments, which typically New Zealand is not a warm water ocean environment… The understanding of what it is like to go through a storm like that is not within the working experience knowledge base of most NZ citizens unless they have lived in those warm ocean environments. I really hate that this is happening to them. Praying for all there…

    Experience builds expectations and anxieties.

For me, my first experience was Hurricane Alicia, and one of horror and awe all mixed up – horror at how hard the wind was blowing and things outside were blowing around without our having any sort of control over any of it and awe that this could go on for hours and hours and hours and hours… without stopping, with torrential rain flooding everything – and we lived in the woods, not on the ocean where storm surge can happen and literally swamp with flood water everything everywhere it comes. As a kid, we moved to Houston just after Hurricane Carla destroyed homes and businesses, plus literally MOVED a bridge, the physics of wind-force and water combination at work. I remember Dad pointing this out as we were going to Galveston and had to take a detour over another bridge to get to the island.

Floridians live with this threat, as do people all along the Gulf of Mexico coast – all the islands in the Caribbean – plus the Atlantic Coastal communities – we are all in the cross-hairs of the West African disturbances that move across the Atlantic in the warm weather months and gain energy to become full blown hurricanes sometimes. In the past decade, or since even longer back than that, the hurricane activity has been greater than ever, in particular those that go into Florida and up the Atlantic coast… Since 2017, when we experienced Harvey, a historic flooding event, more our area has been hit with the polar events several times in 2021, 2022, and 2023. These are weather extremes due to melting polar ice. Would not be surprised if the ice melts in Antarctica have something to do with the latitudes changing for strong tropical cyclones. I’m no meteorologist, but I am an observer of facts.

So, I think this will be a learning experience for many there who are pretty confident that “they’ve got this”.

There is a full-on emergency declaration. Already the storm Gabrielle is doing damage and wreaking havoc, and there is yet to discover more… this is ongoing. This is far from over. The sustained nature of wind and rain over time is what wears against the strength of objects and fills up areas with the weight of water. It is all about physics. Tragedy is unfolding as this is written.

    Riding the storm out

If you are prepared physically and mentally you get through storms, most every time, without freaking out and doing something that is not smart, due to panic. In rare exceptions, such as tsunamis after earthquakes, which really aren’t the same type of storms, this might not be the case, but nonetheless the main thing is to not panic. I try not to panic, but my autonomic response sometimes kicks in and I have to calm myself down and “think”, but not over think the situation – analysts tend to over think, which is a professional hazard at times. Practical thinking and first aid, triage training, and survival skills like you learn as a boy scout or girl scout are handy. It’s handling the unexpected with aplomb that is the true skill.

Even in areas where there are earthquakes and tsunamis, preparation measures are given to people who live there. Some listen and do prepare, some do not. People in both cases when they don’t prepare, don’t make it out alive. That’s a fact.

Also, there are cases if you live where there are lots of big trees and a big tree falls on the shelter where you are and smashes it. Well, that is likely either a God thing or being in the wrong place at the wrong time, which is either a God thing or bad luck. In that case, it might have been an idea to look at the big trees, the direction that the wind would be coming from, and calculate a trajectory if the tree falls – which room would it fall onto? I wouldn’t be hanging out in that room… But then, that’s my take on preparing. Tape windows, go get a bunch of food to last three or more days (if the storm is a bad-ass storm), get phone chargers and phones charged up – make sure the car has gas, yada yada yada…

Sometimes, people do not prepare and are overwhelmed by what happens – when the problems with storms are predictable, but maybe in probability, this is indeterminable ahead of time – it is the “what is the worst that can happen” scenario to prepare for. And if the worst doesn’t happen, it’s always good to not have the feeling, “well that was silly”, as sometimes, and there are times, when it isn’t silly at all – first time experiences are only the first to add to the knowledge base that will be built after multiple experiences over time. Probably it is wise to ask someone who has had multiple storm experiences, if you can sit through the stories and glean the good bits…

The pit into which some people fall includes having an attitude about “things being silly”, with too much bravado, which can lead to doing stupid stuff or under-preparing, which is the equivalent of doing stupid stuff. At any rate, being sensible and listening to weather people and those who are in charge of preparedness is the best combination to stay safe. Bottom line – when the storm is all over and it didn’t affect you adversely, you can count your lucky stars.

All of this being said, I truly don’t like the experience of riding out a hurricane or cyclone, whichever term you use – it is the episode of intense wind and rain leading to big messes to clean up if not life threatening situations. Who does? It’s usually a time of high anxiety and the usual distractions are unavailable. Time to get out the cards, puzzles, and board games! Get out the candles and the fire-starter devices. Practice using them! If you are using matches, make sure they’re still good if they have been sitting a long time. Being prepared for extremes in temperature is also a good idea even if it’s been warm lately, with big cyclone-type storms, the temperatures can drop down to chilly for the duration, especially if it is wet. Wet + wind can introduce wind chill.

Ice storms and tornadoes are included in this array, as well. Don’t like those either.

Flavors and variations of weather events. Ice storms. Tornadoes aka twisters. Typhoons. Any weather events that wreak destruction… Then the other types of earth events like droughts, and fires, and the above mentioned earthquakes… then don’t forget volcanoes. Lots in Mother Nature’s bag of nasty surprises. It’s how we view it, though. In her context her clock is geological. In ours, it’s on our wrists or on a wall… It is philosophical and existential. It is essentially, the nature of things. Nonetheless, it is our reality.

    The test is the recovery.

After the storm has passed through, or ended, the recovery begins. Initially, the search for victims and damage – those who were overwhelmed by mother nature, and those who tragically may have succumbed – missing or found to be gone – these test our faith. Why here? Why now? Why this person? Why this devastation? It is the huge power of nature that is underestimated by humans. It is why our earliest ancestors looked to the heavens or to gods in their culture for answers.

But, here we are. Humans still occupy the planet in great numbers despite Mother Nature and in spite of ourselves, at least at this moment in time. We who survive recover, rebuild in time, and renew. It is what was before and what is after.

Missing spans of nice weather which of course, we are finding we have less and less these days. I guess that is why we call this climate change, “the weather ain’t what it used to be” or was it ever?

If we change our timescale and ask the universal super powers that be, they would say “in geological timescale, you have not seen the worst come back, but you will.” That is the scary thought that we all avoid having.

The dinosaurs could tell us… but, oh – they can’t. Um. There you go.

  • It is the day we say farewell to 2022. Good riddance.

It is the day we say farewell to 2022. Good riddance.

For now, let’s look at the political scene.

It’s crazy, still, but it looks like people are coming to their senses that the orange orangutan is radioactive. Slowly. 2023 will bring more to this ongoing saga. For those of us who are in our later decades, we really are stunned at what has happened.

We also have a shocking situation in Ukraine, with a bully madman having attacked in March, trying to seize what they had no rights to seize. Simple land grabbing via military attacks. They are not winning. The Ukrainians are fighters and clever. It is going to be a long bloody war. Senseless. Devastating. Insane.

Eyes on Europe and the UK, where leadership in different countries shift. France remained stable barely. Italy is now under a government that may turn back pages in history. The UK? What a mess. Since Brexit, there has been nothing but an unfolding debacle with monkeys driving the train off the bridge.

    Now, the weather.

Wind patterns and temperatures from NASA satellite images and sensors – vectors overlaid

We had our second-most severe cold weather outbreak over Christmas, following a summer of hellish heat. We saw a monster hurricane devastate Florida. We’ve seen fires continuing in parts of the US and we watched Europe suffer horrid heat this year. The planet is changing rapidly as scientists predicted it would, and at a faster rate than predicted. This threatens food supplies, health, and welfare of all people everywhere on the planet.

Politicians don’t do the right thing. Climate deniers block funding for solutions designed to shore up infrastructure that has been damaged or that is degrading due to age. Each time there is a cold snap they retort that climate change is not real. There is a personality pattern that has been identified that shows the complexity of what makes these people deniers. The big question is will they ever relent before we totally destroy our home. It’s not looking positive on that note.

    Creepy Disease Outbreaks.

    SARS-CO-19

We’ve endured nearly three years of coping and mitigating SARS-CO-19 and all its variants. We are “vaxxed to the max” which has helped us avoid hospitalization with this disease. We’ve seen how miserable and scary this disease can be – and how unpredictable. We still are hearing about the unfolding long lasting effects. With every little ailment, we don’t know if it’s a long symptom or injury from the virus or something else unrelated.

And in 2022, we’ve seen the emergence of influenza and now RSV that not only is attacking kids, but adults, too. It worries scientists and world leaders as the response was not stellar and was variable across the world. This does not help get control early before deaths become widespread. China has failed. Some countries have given up. Some have fared better than others. It’s a story that is a cautionary tale.

    What’s Positive?

Always the dragonfly is a symbol of hope and survival.

Hope remains. Living one day at a time, hoping for better times and doing what we can to make those happen. What do we look for? Signs of health. Signs of sanity. Signs of happiness. Signs of peaceful coexistence. Are we idealistic? Yes. Someone has to be. But we are also pragmatic. We are going back to drawing and maybe painting, but beginning with drawing, at least. Got some pastels from Santa – a lovely set of Conte’ pastels. Let’s see what happens.

Happy New Year! Bring on 2023.

  • Just when we thought it couldn’t get any weirder…

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any weirder…

The full magnitude of every category of bad stuff that is happening right now is more than most of us can wrap our minds around.

It’s clear to most people that we are witnessing a guy who is running for the most evil human (inhuman?) in history. He and his minions are doing unimaginable horrific things, as he wages his war for fake reasons, against a country who one day was just minding it’s business, and the next is being attacked viciously by armies of troops from the next door neighbor who previously decades ago, “owned” them and now wants them back.

Isn’t that special? What a turd. What a really awful sick jerk – some would think he is a madman, but he functions more like a mastermind of evil. Turd is too nice of a description.

Seriously, a turd is better than this ass-clown piece of work who is vying with Adolf Hitler for most evil inhuman human ever. We just can’t conceive of the horrific things that he has people doing. We think the Taliban is bad, this guy makes the Taliban look like angels… well maybe not angels, but needless to say he’s magnitudes worse – a card carrying officer of evil.

He doesn’t even try to use religion as his base. His goal is to take over the world. He’s like a smiling Satan. Attractive to some. He lures them in. Then he does whatever he wants if they are not 100% loyal – and even if they are, he might decide that he believes that they are not, and does away with them – he “disappears” them. He leaves fingerprints. He doesn’t care.

What the world is starting to do is realize that likely the only way they can get him to stop is to cut him off and starve his people so that they begin putting pressure on him wink-wink to stop. However that would happen. He keeps himself in an extremely secured place – it shows how paranoid he is – and if people step out of line, or he has no use for them anymore, it’s curtains for them.

First there are sanctions. Beginning with the rich and powerful, then working down into the hearts and minds of the citizenry. Cut off the money where possible. Transportation. Communication. Take the shiny pretty things. Deprive them of basic supplies. As sanctions cut off all sorts of necessities that sustain the country, like McDonald’s and Burger King, people may figure out that the world is not happy with him in a big way. No joke. The squeeze will get tighter and tighter.

Plus the kicker is that this also affects mobile devices and support for those addictive objects. No more games, kids! Daddy has been bad, so you don’t get to play! Who loves Russian TV? Nobody.

He tells them that they are fighting Nazis. How the hell did he come up with this? The leader of the country is Jewish, FFS! Seriously? Couldn’t make up a different reason? WTF? But his people who are loyal to him are buying it. Some aren’t. Some have left. Where can they go? That’s the question.

The issue is that his propaganda machine is so strong, and he’s a dick-tater in a fake democracy. If people step out of line, he has those arrested that go against him – and God only knows how big his prison capacity is – it could be that one day he has most of the population in prisons and he and a small portion (minions) are all that’s left. Imagine that. In fiction such things have happened. Dystopian? Real? We will see. He sits on resources that many depend upon, outside of his country, so this will be a re-balancing of dependencies for those countries affected.

He’s the evil guy people knew deep down they should have never trusted. Those that did are crying now. It will take awhile to work out how to become unsnared.

It’s not like when the dinosaurs got wiped out by a meteor, but almost.

It’s certainly interesting to watch our friends at Anonymous do what they do best for the “rest of the world” aka “team”. You go folks – dig out and expose everything you can for the good of the planet. Please.

Certainly interesting to watch all of this unfold and to be, especially in admiration of the Ukrainians and their leader. What a guy – and to think that the big cheeto(r) tried to jerk him around… That action was a sign that something with the big cheeto was amiss.

But we know that. We know that the creep waging war now had a lot to do with the big cheeto being elected in the first place. The creep has pictures of the big cheeto doing outlandish things, right? It’s all a part of the creepy underworld of rich folks that love to flirt with adventure and danger – to do weird things for money – like some sort of gigolo. And somehow, as this is figured out, we likely will see some shameful faces. “Yeah, well… I thought it was a good idea at the time.”

Lots of evidence points to the creep’s minions manipulating everything from public opinions and the voting in just the right places on election night in 2016, as we sat in shock as the returns came in. This didn’t just happen in the US, but has also in other places. Something was up. Something is up. Perhaps parts of a larger scheme as yet to be uncovered.

All the visits by the republican politicians from every walk and level of politics to Russia, to be wined and dined (or “vodka’d”, as it were) – what do you think?

Some of these are people so gullible that they likely signed on to get favors, because favors are what they love to give and receive! For some of them, it relates somehow to their version of Jesus and in their contorted vision of the world, all of this fits – because these “leaders” are prophets protected by their God, and they should listen to them. Hallelujah!

The “revival” style political rallies that these “leaders” host are based on a template created by the televangelists from the large evangelical organizations. When they travel, the goal is to raise bazillions by hosting these “whip up the crowd” style gatherings then making everyone feel special for attending by structuring the speeches to hit them right in the heart of their souls with blather that somehow makes them feel justified in all their grumblings and deep seated anger.

Then come out at the end (or sometimes in the beginning with those “special deals for special people”) come the hooks that are designed to have attendees get out their credit cards, check books, or “hey we’ll take cash” – even PayPal and Apple Pay! There’s a sucker born every minute. The hooks have the bait and those that are caught – the gullible – send the cash. Bird-nests on the ground.

Elections are like sporting events – the Super Bowls of politics. 2016 was a big one. The proof of concept that elections could indeed be manipulated. 2020 was the disappointment and these people are furious. They decided to not take it. They decided to organize and plan the attack to stop it and turn it back – Insurrection 1.0. Watch this space. Meanwhile, those that partook do the old gaslighting trick – accuse everyone else of doing the wrongs that they themselves undertook – and saying it loud over and over and over to make the point. Investigations go on and results are as thin as chicken broth.

Later leading up to the 2016 election, it was tricky. The players were such that it was a delicate situation. It was certainly tampering by “those people controlled by that guy, the head of that country”, the FBI said it was, and the CIA, and what’s that guy’s name that we forgot that did that long investigation? Mueller? Yeah him. All that was buried in the vault.

But it didn’t die. 2020 happened. Again, the sheer outlandishness was enough to scare enough people that many are demanding that this kind of nonsense be stopped. There are multiple investigations ongoing. People are getting impatient. How could we let this go? We all hope that the time is coming close where the evidence is overwhelming and the warrants go out – and the cases are iron clad – because there will be a lot of fight and resistance – and no doubt the authorities have to plan how to deal with this – everywhere.

Back to this war in Ukraine… Sure glad that Zelensky is there because he sure knows how to connect with his people and within them there don’t seem to be a large proportion of butt-heads like we have here that still support the loser ex-president of the USA. They are fighting back, and the rest of the free world is sending them weapons, money, and taking in their people who have escaped – those numbers are mounting daily. Tragedies continue to unfold. No one really knows the depth and bench strength of the attackers. Their display isn’t elegant, but they are persistent. However, the resistance that they face, right now, is more persistent than they ever dreamed it would be.

I’m not opinionated, but I LOVE our President right now – he rocks! Thank God he has enough experience that he is not shooting from the hip on this… Scary to think if this had happened with his predecessor.

But there is much that we do not know, and will not know until actions are taken, despite the ongoing assumptions on social media that somehow we will get warning. That will not happen.

Sometimes in the minds of individuals who think about this all the time, the notion comes up – is the war in Ukraine a big decoy? “Look over here” while something happens over there that is bigger and badder, more sinister than anyone could imagine. We thought it was bad in 2020…

Well, it sure is weird. It’s very very sad for people there and it’s so frightening and devastating beyond anyone’s imagination. The people of Ukraine were just living life one day, then the next, everything changed and for some, life is taken away. Everything.

Earth is the strangest place I’ve ever been.

From a flyer distributed on campus in my freshman year in University in 1971.

Don’t take your daily life for granted. That’s the lesson here.
